The Rant

I beleive that the government's response to natural disasters is not effective enough. The government does not do a good enough of a job in helping the people they do not give a good enough response as they should to help the citizens from dieing. For example Hurricane Katrina was a devasting event that killed many people and many people's homes were destroyed. This was because the government was not aware of what was going to happen and because of this so many people's lives were lost literally even their personal belongings. Shouls we even look up to the government is their not doing their job? that is a good question. If somehting were to happen now you would want to know ifthings would be alright, if your safe, and if your family and loved one's alright. How could you be sure if you will be okay will the government be there to help you or will they not? will there response still be the same like always or will they actually give a good warning to the people. This has a been a question for many years is the government doing their job. They keep saying new technology will be made to help their response but will this new technology be affective?

Experts say....

Experts are saying like Ben Wisner states "The targets at the beginning of this process were very clear and strong and concrete. What we've seen is that over the diplomatic process of reaching a consensus, they have been tremendously watered down, that is an enormous disappointment." This was said by the hazard vulnerability expert at the london school of economics. This agree's with my arguement because the government has watered down and hasn't really showed effort in trying to change their response. Mr. Robinson states "Plans to use rail lines, commercial air travel and military buses to move people out of harms way--efforts not employed last year---are in the works." This quote was said by the regional director of response and recovery for the federal emergency managment agency. This agree's with my arguement because the effrots were not employed last year which caused many people's lives because of their actions which they should of been ready for last year. Ray Nagin states "Having an aligned system means just one cook in the kitchen and hundred of servers on the front lines, if aligning a system means that government's, business, and charitable organizations have cede authority to a single director so be it, catastroph is not time for protecting bureaucratic turf." This quote was said by the Mayor of New Orleans. This agree's with my arguement because its true about emergencies is not a time to protect bureaucratic turf its time to protect the people and give them warning this show's how much the government is doing to protect the people.

Another strong arguement is.....

The government's discrimination from ethnicity and poverty. In the poorer area's they do not give the same treatment to those in the nicer areas. The cities dont get as good of a warning. A quote by Kobe government stated "There was also recognition that poverty and disaster's are often interrelated. Worldwide about 95% of all death's in disasters occur in developing countries." This is very true mostly the developing countries suffer the most in emergency's. Does the government care about the minority's and poverty or are they just helping out the people who pay the most taxes?

My Strongest argument is.....

My strongest argument hurricane karina. Hurricane karina did not give people a good enough of a warning they gave people warning but this warning was not clear to the people that it would be a devastating storm. They told the people once the hurricane hit the warm waters of the gulf of mexico the storm would get stronger and be very destructive. The government did not stress it enough that it would be a deadly storm. The after affects were horrible thousands lost their lives, their homes, and their city. The government needs better technology so the people can be prepared and know were to go when another disaster like this happens. The government thinks their doing such a good job with helping people be giving money and food afterwards, but this was somewhat their fault fot all these lives. They could of givin a better warning to the people of New orleans. This why I think the government is not doing their job by protecting the people and their homes.

I Agree with....

All that I have read about all those lives being lost I agree with the con side. There have been billions lost beacue of these disasters this shows the government is not doing that much of a good job. Also this shows even though they give people warning and everything they are still not prepared and not ready to deal with emergencies effectively. They have made all this new technology to try and help the situation but still many lives are still being lost. Even thought the government does respond and help the people still it is not that effective. They respond more after the disaster has accured by providing supplies and money. But the government is not quick on the response and their warnings to people. So in my research that I have done I chose the con side from what I have read and seen in the past.

CON

The governement althought has made changes for improvement to their response they still have caused many people's lives. Like September 11th they were very unaware of what was happening and they were not prepared for this because of their actions many people's lives have been lost. The government should be ready at anytime for anything to happen. Also the government discriminates on poorer areas and on ethnictiy of a person. Everyone should be created equal they should not favor over someone because of where they live or what they are. Because the poorer area's dont pay alot they dont give them the same treatnment as people with alot of money and pay alot of taxes. This is showing wrong treatment to people becuase of where they live and how much they pay the city. Everyone should have an equal right to be saved and live. The government's response to emergency situations has alot of con's.

PRO

There are many postives the government have done to respond to emeregencies. Like Hurricane karina they where very unaware of what was going to happen. The govenrment was not prepared but afterb this happend the govenrment was there for the people. Like bringing food and shelter to the people who were affected. Because of this disaster happening the government has found more ways to help people and if somthing lik hurricane karina were to happen again they would be on top of things and they will know how to respond to the emergency. The governmet has now made new technology to help detect these disasters before they hit so people can be more alert have time to respond to the situation. Also the police and firefighters will have time to evacute people so more lives will be saved. These are some pro's about the government's response they have made new technology and have learned from there mistakes in the past so now they know how to respond better in an emergency situation.
